Yeah, I've been down there. Don't ever go. He will take your money, and he's got some little old guy that's with him. It looks like he can't swing a golf club that's scratch in his home. It's a racket. Don't ever go. If Ira Peter asks you to play golf, the answer is yes, but not there. We can go to your house afterwards. We can look at the course, but we're not playing on that course. That's a wise move. I mean, the guy knows where every damn creek is. I hit a ball on a creek, I couldn't even see it was a creek. That was my bad. And then he said, ooh. I said, ooh, my ass. That's 260 yards straight. He goes, yeah. You might want to hit that 250 or 270. So he has to play the black, you play the red. It doesn't matter where he plays. I'm telling you, I was playing the pretty good golfer much better than me. And thank God I had cash because he didn't. And ironically, I paid and he left. So I'm still screwed. I'm still holding the ball on that. Fellows, we're down to four. Rodney, I'm gonna go to you first because I thought your team would be one of these four. Exactly what did you see? Well, first, let me, I gotta stop. I was pulling for Duke. That is almost as bad as saying I'm pulling for the Ravens. It's on tape. I I loathed the thought of looking at Hurley. Bobby or I I can't stand either one. And Bobby Hurley was a great player at Duke. I think he's been a pretty good coach. Their father was coach of St. Anthony's in Jersey, great coach. I I literally think that's the kid that kicked you in the shin and ran to the teacher and hit. And he's just the guy that beat out. I don't know why I think that. I'm just telling you, he looks like it. And his mother's reaction when he hit the shot proved uh that's one of the greatest things I've seen on social media is reading her her lip syncing to uh holy effing S. He made the shot. Now, I digress, but what'd you see there, Rodney? What happened?

Well, the first thing people will always say is that kid lost the game. That one play didn't lose the game. That was a horrendous play. But earlier in the game, in this in the first half, they totally dominated. They're up 19. If they play the last couple minutes of the first half, they got the chance to be up 25 or 30, made a few mistakes, ended up 15. A 15-point game at halftime, the game's not over. 25-28 point game at halftime, that game's over. Should have been over anyway, but they in the second half made so many mistakes that they don't normally make, and their turnovers were killer because their turnovers turned into baskets on the other end. It wasn't like it was the ball was thrown out of bounds. It was a ball thrown directly to the other team for a dunk on the other end. I know you've heard this before. The only way Connecticut wins, or the team that's losing in that scenario gets back in the game is with some help. Or Hubert Davis coaching. One or the other. If they had done their normal, they would have done that again in the second half. Officiating had nothing to do with it. There's some crazy calls on both teams in every game that just don't make any sense. But as far as the last play goes, think back to a year ago. They're up six with 15 seconds to go. They had uh inbounds pass, but comes down to the end, they throw the ball in, they get it to Procter, who should have immediately found Kanipple, because that's who we wanted on the line. He didn't. He held the ball, got fouled, missed a free throw. We end up losing the game on a, you know, guy makes a three-point shot that he doesn't normally make. Fast forward to this year, they did everything right. Threw the ball in, threw it back to the inbounds guy, threw it up to Little Boozer, and he could have done many things. The only thing you can't do is turn it over. So one scenario is he holds onto the ball. People say, why did he throw it? He holds on the ball, goes to the free throw line. Same scenario as last year. If he hits both free throws, or at least one, we can't lose. Hits both, games over. Another scenario is he misses the front end of the one and one, they go down and they throw up a three-pointer like they did at the end, and it still may lose. But at least you at least you're on the line. The scenario that makes sense to me, and I don't know why people don't do this more often, is when he had the ball there, and I want to say it was like 4.7, didn't have to worry about a five uh 10-second call because it was exactly 10 seconds on the clock when they threw it in. He could have taken that ball and thrown it as high as he can straight up in the air. You're not going to hit the ceiling, as long as you don't hit the scoreboard. Throw the ball as high as you can up in the air. By the time the ball comes down, the game's over. The other scenario is there's two guys, two Duke guys on the other end, and he could have thrown that ball 30 feet over the defender's head. The only thing you can't do is not throw it high enough where he can get a hand on it. Throw it over his head, the game's over. The ball could roll out of bounds, our guys catch it on the other end, the game's over. The only scenario is you throw the ball where it gets stolen, and then a kid who hadn't hit a three-pointer all night, he's it up and it goes in, and I think they hit four of their last five, three of their last four or four of their last five three-pointers. Just like everything had to be perfect for them, and everything did. It fell that way for them.

Yeah, so so with that, I'm gonna ask you a couple questions for about that before I go to Ira and that. So so first is I am, have been, John Shire is one of the few Duke people I didn't loathe. Like I liked him as a player, I think he's a fantastic coach. Uh you know, and sometimes you take that meltdown, like Huber Davis lost a job for a 19-point meltdown. I don't think it's gonna happen to Shire. Uh uh, you know, I don't I don't think it's even remotely the same, but it's one of those things where careful what you say on social media about uh these losers but 19 point, then your team does it now. It's can't say anything back to it. I found that copy. So Shire is a guy for the job, agree? Absolutely. Okay, and the the booze are they're twins, correct? How the hell is that much? I mean, I I don't get that. Maybe, you know, me br me and Brandon are twins too. It's just five years apart. But uh, one's bigger, one's smarter, one's faster. I I don't get it.

Here's one quick thing. Talking about Shire, and people said, Oh, we can't win the big one. How many times did they say that about your guy, Carolina Dean Smith, about Coach K? He's only been there a few years. He's been to the Final Four once, the Final Eight, twice. I'm not sure that they had the best team this year. They were good. I think they had every opportunity. Oh, absolutely. They talk about, oh, well, it's Michigan, Arizona, Duke can't play with them. Do you not remember when Duke beat Michigan by eight a couple months ago? Michigan wasn't missing anybody. Maybe a little biased, but in my opinion, if they played well, they'd have beat either one of them. But definitely last year they had the best team. Should have won it. They had every every piece, but it didn't happen. But when they went to Blaine Shire, there was a practice where they went over the exact scenario that just happened. And he said, he's got the tape up, and he says, What do you do here? They pulled up a Chicago Bulls inning of a game. They threw the ball into, I think it was Tyus Jones, it was one of the Jones brothers. He took the ball and threw it straight up in the air. High as he could, straight up in the air. By the time the ball came down, the game was over. They went through the exact scenario that just happened. And the kid did made a mistake.

I hope Illinois beats them by 50. Yeah, I know who you're pulling for. I I I do think Illinois will win. I think they've got the best player. That's probably my heart speaking more than anything else. But Connecticut is they're they're a good team. They're not an elite team. I don't think Illinois' an elite team either. I think there were three. I think it was Duke, Michigan, and Arizona. But I I do think Illinois will win because they have the best player. On the other side, I I think that's a toss-up. I think either one of those teams could win the whole thing. Yeah, they're both good.

I think Arizona's the best of the four that are left. I like their style of basketball. They're they're one of the teams in the nation that's that shoots the least three pointers and has probably the uh the most points in the paint. So I just like their physicality and the way that the way they go to work each day. So I think Arizona's the best team.

Well, let me ask you this, Ira. I bitched and complained social media during the game. I uh you know, I I told people early, I wasn't mad that Carolina, I was mad that Carolina blew a 19-point lead to lose.

But I was okay Carolina losing because I didn't think Carolina was that good. And hey, what a better year to have BCU or go on a run, and I'm a Martelli Jr. fan, and I really love the technical he got against Illinois. Does the fact that Illinois leads the country in free throw gap, meaning they take, you know, use Carolina used to be famous for making more than the other team attempted. Uh Illinois as that team has been for two years. They have the largest gap between free throws attempted of any team. And at one point when Martelli got his technical, I think you and I talked about this, Ira. It was 17 to nothing. Seventeen free throws attempted for Illinois, zero for VCU, and Martelli had just seen enough of that shot. And hopefully, and that that again it made me more addearing to him as he got that technical, a guy with a little similar fire as I got. Congratulations. So they're they're big and European big, right? They got all those Russia, whatever the hell they get, they got all those foreign kids playing for them. And you like Arizona. I'll give you a scenario. UConn comes out, can't beat either team on that side, do you believe?

I don't believe that. I think that I think either Michigan or Arizona would be favored, but I don't think it'd be by as much as much as you believe. Uh I think, you know, you just talked about Illinois shooting all the free throws. What they do is they disrupt the game with that. Uh the other team can't get in any type of a rhythm. Reminds me a lot of uh the way Oklahoma City plays uh with Shea Gillis Alexander. He takes all those free throws as well. I think that disrupts it. And Yukon's pedigree the last, you know, this will be three out of the last four years, possibly they could be playing for the national championship. So I I like what they're doing. I think it'll be a lot closer game than people are giving it credit for.

But if Illinois comes out, is it a different outlook against either one of the other ones?

They make you play such great offense half-court offensive basketball. I mean, they really tighten it down. The fast breaks don't happen because of all the foul shots that they do get. And they're a physical team, so I don't I think it'll be a good game. And I think Duke getting beat made this Yukon Illinois game even better. Because I think Duke would have blown them out of the gym.

As they did last year. Yeah, Duke had Duke had a uh aura about them. Even the game Carolina won, Duke was clearly the better team and had some snafoos there. But this this Duke team to me, I I know Rodney may disagree that the last years was better. I uh there was something about this team I thought that had the Moxie, they had the pieces eight, nine deep to play and to win.

I think the thing that hurt them this year was the injuries. Yeah, well, because those two guys coming back was huge. They weren't gonna win without those two guys, but they weren't a hundred percent.

Yeah. I I don't and I, you know, I think like every sport, I don't know that people play a season of anything and end up at a hundred percent. Ira, let me ask you quickly before we go to a couple football signings and into golf and maybe a little racing. Guys coach in Arizona, is he Carolina's pick, and that's why Carolina's cooled off, because he's not answering questions about either job, right? He only wants to talk about his team, which is accurate, but is he the guy?

I think they want him to be the guy. Uh Tommy Lloyd's, he's he's done a great job at Arizona. I just don't know if uh Carolina's not the prospect it used to be, as far as I'm and I'm I I could bleed to our hero blue, uh, but it's not the uh attraction that it used to be. So my I'm just curious, would he would he leave an organization that he's built to where it's at to start over, basically? They're even talking about Dusty May being an option with at Michigan. So Billy Donovan's name keeps coming up. Uh I just wonder if Billy Donovan uh feels like uh the bridesmaid right now and is gonna just get pissed off at the end of the day and not want the job. But Lloyd is obviously their number one uh choice if at all possible. But I just I don't know if I leave Arizona if I'm going.

Folks, we're gonna do something rather interesting post the finals. So next week's show will cover the finals, a little more golf, and then we're gonna do some mock drafts of our favorite teams and kind of talk about how what teams need and get prepared for this draft in Pittsburgh, which I'm excited to hear about. Uh and I just got a question, Rodney first, even though it affects Ira. Uh, I've been a Kirk Cousins guy. I don't know why the guy's made $325 million in his career and he's won one playoff game. And here he goes to the Vegas Raiders. Ira, you you had him as a Viking guy. Are you a fan?

I love it. I think that if we do end up drafting Mendoza number one, which I think we will, I think their personalities are obviously gonna they're gonna uh mate really well, and I think he's a great professional football player. I mean, he's not the greatest football player, but he's a great pro. And if sit behind the sit behind him a year uh and watch how he does the media, watch how he performs on the field, and I really think he'll perform well. He's two years from his Achilles surgery. I think he's still got a little bit of gas in the tank, and I think that is a great bridge for uh for Mendoza and the Raiders to have uh I think it's a steal at $1.1 million. They're gonna have to pay him 10 more million, so you're getting him basically for 11, 11.3 for the next year. So I think it's a great deal for him.

Rodney? I I agree. I think he's, as we've said before, he's a really, really good guy. You can't fault him for accepting contracts that are offered to him. He was very good with us uh at the Vikings and the whole Atlanta deal. I mean, he's coming off an injury and and then picking a quarterback in the first round, unexpectedly was a lot to deal with. I I think he'll do well with the Raiders if they have the other pieces.

The Vikings now uh I was reading a thing this week. They got Kyler Murray, we've talked about that, and the the ways that O'Connell can develop his game, and it could very well, even if it looks less than stellar for the opportunity for JJ, this could even be bigger for him to have another year of another veteran like the the intent was to be. If the Vikings today made a signing, there's something they traded or do something. What is that piece that you want to see them go get? Because didn't they get they got Hargrave, right? They got Javon Hargrave. Or did he go? He went to the Packers, that's right.

We had to have the quarterback. It's gotta be some help in the trenches, and I know we made spent a lot of money last year. The center got hurt and ends up retiring. We had Hargrave, and he was one year and gone. I'm drawing a blank. The other gentleman we had from that was with uh Washington and came over, didn't do very well, but we picked up a guy from the United Football League and he played great for us. Because in the quarterback situation, I think if Murray plays well, I think he'll move on from JJ. I don't think if uh Murray's gonna mentor him for another year and then JJ's gonna take over. If given the opportunity, he he may take a run with a job, but I'm not sure if Murray plays well, I don't think JJ will see the field very much, and I don't think he'll be our quarterback of the future if Murray plays well.

Jared Jones keeps about keeps talking, and I know they signed him, put him on a franchise tag with um Pickens, but I think that's still an opportunity for Dallas to uh it's tough to keep two receivers like that happy in Dallas. There's not enough uh not enough footballs to go around. So I think you could package that and get a really, really good draft pick, probably a couple good draft picks, the way Pickens uh played last year. He just was a phenomenal talent last year, especially when uh CD Lamb was out hurt. So I I see Dallas, uh you know, they're building all that draft capital right now, so I could see them even getting more for Pickens.

I still. I like Sheffler. I like his game. Justin Rose plays that golf course extremely well. Uh, even though he's, I think, 44, 45 years old for a golfer. That's obviously old, but he uh he plays that golf course really. Yeah, close to retirement age, exactly. Um But he plays really good, but I still think Scotty's the man to beat. And the man that's extremely hot coming into this is Bryson DeChambeau. Don't put it past him. He's uh he has the length to play with anybody, and his accuracy and the moxie that kid brings to the table is just uh second to none right now. So I think I would like to see him win it, to be honest with you. I would pick Bryson right now.

It's golf. If you can win one tournament, now the US Open, the British Open, they're all phenomenal tournaments. But if you're gonna win one, you want it to be the Masters. I think it's the tournament that everybody wants to win and says that's the that's the one. I think Scheffler's gonna win also.

I you know something uh Ira and I talked about this kind of off air last week we were talking. I know he hadn't started out like gangbusters and it but it hadn't he hadn't been bad. Other people just been really good, right? It's just not been normal Sheffler. It seems like to me this is about the time when something's stored up, and damn if he doesn't like I'll show you all. And he doesn't say that, he just says I showed we watched uh Happy Gilmore 2 the this week when my kids were in town, and I forgot there's like a hundred and sixteen cameos in there, and the golfing part of it with Scheffler and and all the those guys are hilarious. It uh it's hard to make a remake, you know. We we're popular because our writers aren't worth a s anymore. Go ahead and beep that out, Weigel. But uh we don't get good comedies anymore. We get people trying to run off, and very rarely do they make uh as good an impact as the first one. I thought this number two was great too, and and it's the second or fifth time I've watched, I don't know. Uh but it is golf, riding you're all right, and it's something that people uh especially guys that that desire to play. Hell, even guys that don't play that just like it, they have a chance to sit and watch The Masters is a great name for that because you watch a mastery of a sport that I still don't understand how the little son bitch sits still and I hit it crooked. I I don't get it. But I'm good at that. Or I'll hit it when I hit it straight, I'll hit it in a creek. If I'm playing with a turd that doesn't tell you there's a creek there. So I I just wanted to throw that that out there too.

Hey, another reason I think that tournaments are so special is it's it happens every year there. The U.S. Open moves, the British Open moves, all PG Yeah, it's there, it's a constant. They're continuously updating the way that golf course looks, the way it's played.

I mean, it's it's just a really well-run tournament, and the prestige of that green jacket is just uh sometimes it's too much for some people to accept and win, and other ones thrive in that environment, like the uh Jack and Tiger and Phil and those type of guys just uh lived and breed that tournament. They were just great at it.

As we get into NASCAR to close the show, one of the funniest memes that I saw about Tiger's accident, and let me tell you, folks, first off, there is nothing humorous about driving while you're intoxicated. And I I can tell you, Rodney can tell you this, uh, and Ira, you can too. You've seen it. I two drinks is my limit, I don't drive. That's why my Uber bill is pretty high for my company, or I'm really hammered when I ride with my wife. That's a requirement. So you just don't get a little drunk. Ira, and I'm gonna ask Rodney this because Rodney's now got some affinity for NASCAR with some of the companies he works with. Ira, is 2311 still the standard now through these first five, six weeks?

Tyler Reddick's still the standard right now. I wouldn't say that Bubba is. And Tyler's got some work to do with these short tracks. He's really good at the road courses, he's really good at mile and a half, he's gonna be really good at drafting tracks. Uh he struggled last week at Martinsville, so that that's where their work is. He's got you know he's leading the points by over two races right now. So if he didn't race the next two races, he's still probably being the lead in the in the points. So yeah, they're the standard. Uh Toyotas, I think, are the standard, obviously. Uh right now. Toyotas. Toyotas. Toyotas, as your dad would say. But yeah, last week was first Chevy win, the latest that's come in a long time. So Chase Ellot was uh he was quick in practice on Saturday, didn't show a lot in the race until they made a gutsy call uh about halfway through the race and uh got a timely debris caution, which I'm sure NASCAR loved, uh, and I'm sure Chase loved it as well. Uh get the most popular driver up front. And then not quite sure what the hell Bubba Wallace was thinking. Looked like he just misjudged how many people he was going to wreck in that corner. Uh, you know, Carson Hosemar has had a reputation of not being uh patient with people. And I guess uh Bubba thought I'll show you, but he ended up wrecking half the field. He caused millions of dollars worth of damaged race cars, uh went from third in the points to, I think, the 11th in points, so not only cost a lot of other guys a good finish, but also cost himself one. Hamlin dominated the race, went leading almost 300 laps, uh, went in both stages. Just a slip-up on a late race start where um Ross Chastain didn't pit. He was the only guy not to pit. And Denny could not get out in front of him, and then that's when Bubba drove through Carson, and the nine car happened to be in the lead at the time, so he was able to really fend off uh all chargers, including Hamlin, there at the end. So popular win for NASCAR, popular win for Chase Elliott. Um, like to see him do well. Uh when he does good, NASCAR does good. He's he's really the new Dell Jr. Uh as far as carrying the banner for the flag for NASCAR. So good for him. They're off this week, which is awesome for those guys, and uh to Bristol next weekend. So should be an interesting race there as well.

Fabio will probably know this better than me, but usually those things tend to cycle or even out as the year goes on. I would love to see that be the case. I have nothing against Toyotas. Joe Gibbs is a great guy. Can't say as much for the drivers that are driving the coyotes, but I hope it does. Because in a perfect world, you want it to be you're winning because your crew and you have a connection and y'all have set the car up and you've made whatever changes throughout the race. And there have been years past that the whether it be Chevrolet or Ford or Chrysler back in the day that they just nominated. But I hope that it's a an opportunity for the Chevrolets and Hendrix to start making. Let me tell you this.

Dodge is coming back, boys. That truck team being built in Childress's shops. And I know Childress Rodney and I talked about it last week. Childress was close to a con contract with Dodge, but when they pulled out in 13, those five Ram trucks that are back in this year, they're getting their motor program, and I'd say somewhere like they did the last time, somewhere around the first Michigan race, they're gonna announce they're gonna be back and who their flagship teams would be. I like Jimmy Johnson, Richard Petty at Legacy Motorsports yet again to go back to Dodge. I do like children's to go to Dodge, and it'll be one more. And Ira kind of had a good idea, maybe that front row motorsports that's done extremely well with less equipment with some good good good races and some wins, that'd be an upstart team that you could do.
