I was on the D Shambeau hype train there for a couple of weeks. Uh after what he'd been doing. I thought he was really going to perform, especially the way he played there last year, had an opportunity to win it. Uh just uh man, made some untimely errors and just wasn't able to do it. But uh Michael Roy or two times, I mean, back-to-back champions hadn't happened but three times or four times now, ever. Uh so I didn't think that was the wise pick, but I was uh I sit corrected, obviously, on that. But he played uh three really stellar rounds of golf in one uh round where he held on and was just able to do enough, honestly. There wasn't anybody who took a big run at him over the weekend except for Sheffler, uh, which his slow start cost him again, it's cost him several tournaments this year so far. Played the weekend really well. And I also think the dry conditions there really made that golf course fast and hard to be able to throw uh a lot of shuts close. Uh a lot of them that you saw go in were from long distance, a lot of those butts. So the elements and him having the lead, which what he which he accumulated over the first couple of days, really uh propelled Roy to that win. Uh good for him. He played well. I particularly don't didn't want to see him win. I just uh I always root for the uh the American team no matter what it is, and uh uh wanted to see one of our guys win it, but wasn't to be this year, but uh congratulations to Roy and his team.

Sheffler was one shot away. Still the best golfer out there.

Could be the best golfer away, but hell, I'm one shot away from a lot of things, including the air conditioning this freaking place. Was there somebody in that field that surprised you not being out, but who was in? Was there somebody, Ira, that was in there that shocked you?

Somebody that did shock me was Terrell Hatton. He's he has the reputation known of really just being a hothead, blowing up over a lot of things. And that golf course can obviously frustrate you. It's uh he really held his composure and was really in it there. I mean, he's kind of had him a top five finish. He just um shocked me as good as he played. And Justin Rose continues to shock me as well. He's he's played that golf course extremely well over the years, just hasn't been able to get it done. He's uh went to two playoffs, I believe, and lost uh each of those, but he's kind of defying uh father time right now as far as a golfer. I mean, he's in his mid-40s uh playing at an elite level, especially at the Masters. So those I would say those two guys, uh the way they performed over the over the entire week uh impressed me.

Dudden Rose sh on himself a lot. He had a couple sh on himself holes. You know, he'd make a charge, took the lead a little bit, right? He was up by two. Yeah, and then knocks one in the somewhere like I was swinging and hit it in pine trees and had to come. I mean, he he always at that tournament is right there, but can't get over the hump, and it's always a do-it-against yourself thing. It's never a somebody else just gets better. He really said for lack of better terms. Do you agree?

That and if you think about the masters, nothing is instantaneous at the masters. So if I'm up by two and I double bogey a hole, you may not know that as an as a playing competitor for a couple of holes. Because it's all, hey, I would just double bogey 13, post it on the boards. There is no digital scoreboards out there, there's none of that. So there may be times when he's feeling like he needs to hit shots that he truly doesn't. And that can creep up on you. If you think I have to go for this green and two, and I have to make it birdie, it could come end up biting you. And some of those shots did bite him.

I mean, that makes it to me exciting, right? I mean, I you know, because it does, yeah.

Rodney, what'd you see that you liked or disliked? I know you're on Scheffler's nuts here about he's the best.

I I agree. She Scheffler is the best, but I'll tell you another guy that I really like and enjoy watching play is Cameron Young. I think he's gonna win some big tournaments. And Xander Shoffley, he's another one I enjoy watching play. I I I was hoping that it was gonna come down to Young and Scheffler. And Young was right there for a long time, had a few fortunate breaks, but that's true with anybody that's in the running at the Masters. You're gonna have a few balls that uh just roll out beyond the tree where you have a swing at it or hits a tree and go back into the fairway. But I think he's he's an up-and-comer.

So then we go out of that and get what we can get. Ira, then we run the Bristol race. What what happened there? What did you like there?

I still saw the uh the dominance of the Toyotas there and on tracks where arrow package doesn't matter. I wouldn't say Hendrix showed up, but I would say that uh Larson shows up there. I mean, he led the most laps. And if Ryan Blaney could ever get a pit crew, he would be tough to beat. So he's almost lost a hundred spots in the pits this year alone. So going in leading, coming out fourth, coming out fifth, sometimes even worse. But Ty Gibbs ran a smart race and was quick at the end, made a gutsy call not to come in and was able to hold those guys off, which I wasn't sure that he'd be able to. But he's been knocking on the door. He's been very consistent running top five the last three or four races. So he's put himself in good position to be able to sort of let that moment not be too big for him. So uh it was really good. I'm just curious to see how the Hendrick cars will do once the arrow package matters again, because they've struggled until we got to these short tracks. I don't know if it was the best timing for uh for Bristol to be put on the Master Sunday weekend. Maybe it's two different demographics of uh of watchers, but it looks like their attendance had struggled once again uh at that track. It used to be the hardest ticket in uh NASCAR to get, and it looks like you could just walk up the day of and go get you a couple of couple of tickets anywhere you want in the track. So they're gonna have to figure out figure that out. But uh Ty Gibbs and Toyota Strong once again.

Unfortunately, that's the viewing of a lot of tracks now. Richmond completely got rid of the whole entire stands for the backstretch.

Yeah, I mean you can't. Yeah, I remember. And listen, Bristol tickets to me were gold in the retail business. You want to go to Bristol? I got two tickets for you here. I need ten Frito Towers in every store you got. And they were people like were willing to take termination to get them. You know what I'm saying? See me there. Richmond's the same way. I used to have a great party here. And watching a truck race, you know, because I'm into those Dodges and Rams in there, and I I saw a lot in the truck race that led me to believe that Saturday and Sunday would be better. Saturday lived up to it. Sunday, they're racing fairly clean there. You know what I'm saying? That's Martinsville and Bristol, fairly clean compared to what it used to be. So I think they need to get a little more of the boys back in it.

I think it coming, it's coming soon, too. And he's a driver. Yeah, he is. But here's the standard that Hendricks has set. They're struggling. And when you look at the standings, they have the six, seven, uh, I'm sorry, the five, six, and seven spots. And that's a bad year for them. Yeah.

Well, hell, it should be. It's the Los Angeles Dodgers and NASCAR. They spend more than anybody. You know, again, that's not at all a wine. That is the fact, and he's got what he's got. But uh here's what I'd tell you. We've mentioned it before, and we said who's going to Dodge? Is it Childress? Is it front row? Is it all them? But here's what I'd tell you. Gibbs gets a Toyota torch, Pinsky gets a four torch, and a secondary goes to Keselowski and that old Fenway bunch. And then the Chevy torch goes to Hendricks, and frankly, the manufacturers don't give two shots after that. They'll get you in, but they care that those three big ones are the ones they want to get them in there. The Toyotas with Gibbs, and that that is a satellite. I don't care what anybody says, the 23 or 2311 Motorsports with Jordan and that that's a satellite of of Gibbs. They're getting all that stuff in there. And then Pinsky has just got superior people, no matter what level of racing it is, except for our pit crew, according to IRA here.

But that's why he keeps his stuff in there altogether. But how many teams uh do they have how many cars do they have total between those three you just mentioned?

Well, so Gibbs technically shows three. And then front row motorsports, I mean, I'm sorry, 2311 shows two with a third one occasionally in. So they got a a part-time, that's six, five plus a part-time, and then you gotta know that the other Toyota teams are getting all their juice. No, no, I'm saying of those head honcho guys.

The thing that's so different about now and years and years and years ago was back then teams might have two. Most of them were just one company. Yeah, they were single teams.

So unless you're Patty had two and and uh correct. And now that's what I'm telling you. With Dodge coming back in, we'll see. But they're gonna pick a a couple teams that they can interject some money in that they think just imagine, again, I say this you sign Hosevar, you get that squad flipped over there and give them all their money and say, This is our guy, this is our Kyle Bush, and watch what happens. That's who Dodge should go after that. I think so too. Well, golf is one thing, racing is another, baseball is completely another. And you remember last week, Ira, about the same time he was giving you shit about D Shambeau, he was talking about the Yankees stomping all over half major leagues, and they have suddenly forgot to wipe when they got up. Because I think they're about three and seven in their last ten. Are they not, Rodney? Well, they're ten and eight on the year, and they were nine and two, I thought.

What's happened to the Yankees, dude? They have come back to reality with pitching for one. You're playing the A's, who have turned out to be a decent team, and the Angels who were struggling big time until they got to New York, and you're losing three out of four to each one of them. That's games that you look at and say we should take three out of at home, we should take three out of four from the A's and three out of four from the Angels. It is nice to see Mike Trout playing like his old self. He's he's always been a stud. Just a shame. Nothing against the Angels. It's just a shame that he's spending his entire career there what he could have been.

Ira, you brought it up off air there. Tell me about the Padres. Look at the run there. What did you say they were in the last 10?

Well, you know, how about both of you all kiss my ass because the central National League Central Leading Pittsburgh Pirates are doing exactly what they do to their fandom every year and get out there and start yeah, and then all of a sudden they, you know, but here's I'd tell you the difference in the Pirates. They not only have pitching like they've had for several years, they've actually started scoring runs. I think as we looked a minute ago, they were tied seven to seven in today's game against the Nationals. So pitching wasn't a strength today. Um they spent a bunch of money on one kid a couple weeks ago. Oh, yeah. So they're they're the I at least you want to see that in it.

Well, you didn't have to tell them that all day. That's all right. I mean, it's uh what it takes my mind off the heat that is my house right now. So here's what I'd tell you, folks. Baseball to me is one of those things. It's a check on me early on. There's nothing really crazy going on. NHL playoffs are getting ready to start. I get excited about that. My penguins are going to play the Flyers in the first round of that metro thing as they get turned on. The winners got to play the hurricanes. I don't see either one of those teams getting by the hurricanes, but a man can hope. NFL, Big Al, our mentor here, used to say this one thing. Baseball is America's pastime. The NFL is America's passion. And I agree with that wholeheartedly. And I love the passion of business that is the NFL, and it's coming. I had a question out of South Carolina asking, who did we think would be the most active first round movers upwards or backwards? Ira, your Raiders got the first pick. There's no chance in hell they're moving out. They're taking Mendoza. Are they active back into the first round or are they going to let it be?

If they are, I think it's going to be at the tail end of it, uh, where they won't have to give up as much. But I think they'll stand uh steadfast in it and uh don't think that they will trade back in. I think they've done a really good job in free agency filling a lot of the lot of the weaknesses that they have. Surely there's a bunch more to fill, but I think they've done a really good job, and I think they wouldn't want to give away future draft capital, especially with a new coach coming in. So I think we'll stand where we're at.

Do you see any team in particular you look? Dolphins, Jets, maybe, they have so many glaring holes. They're looking for a lot of picks that they need. Saints don't have many picks. Do you see somebody, one of them, trying to get out of the first round or to move backwards in the first round to attain picks?

Miami's on a fire sale right now. I think they would continue to do that. I think somebody like the Patriots or the Bills would probably try to get up in there to get them a receiver that they need. Uh, Bills need also need a lot of defensive help, need more defensive help than they have in the past. This draft is huge in defense. Um, a lot of outside linebackers are going to be highly sought after in the first round. Uh, a lot of a lot of secondary players as well. So I can see the Bills or Patriots uh moving up, even the 49ers uh trying to get up because their wide receiver core is really depleted. Uh over the last year and a half, they really took a lot of shots. So I can see any of those three teams really moving up aggressively.

I think they will. I think their big move was getting Kyler Murray. I think they will stay where they are. And if for some reason he and JJ aren't the fit, next year there's a lot of quarterbacks available. What are they targeting? It's gotta be line help. It's gotta be help in the trenches.

What happens if that safety from Oregon's there to replace the thing?

I think you gotta take him. I think you gotta take him. I think we can use some more depth that across the offensive and defensive line, which every team can use. But I think we're we also may go after a tight end or a running back.

There's two or three really good running backs that could be interesting. George, if love falls back there, his running mate from Notre Dame's in there. I mean, they got some good running backs.

I don't think we'll be one of the big give up three picks in the next couple years drafts to move up in this one. I don't think that will be the most important thing.

If I was Pittsburgh, I'm building as many second rounders for next year as I can to trade up to get whoever that future quarterback is, because I don't know if the kid from Ohio State that's a sixth rounder, Will Howard, I don't know if he's it. I expect Aaron A. Aaron to be back, although he hasn't said anything yet, but I expect him to be back. And I don't know if Will Howard, but McCarthy says he's got a lot of habit in. The reason I'm bringing that up is if you take a team like Pittsburgh's got 12 picks, and this is one of the very few drafts. That we see six kids, seven kids far ahead, no matter what their position, of everybody else. And then you got about a hundred after that where you can say, Hell, I had him scored higher than him. Each one of those teams is going to have them ranked higher on their board. So I don't think you have to stretch to get there. It's been said that this is a buyer's market. I mean, if you want to move up in that first round, there are teams like Miami, the Jets, again, New Orleans New Orleans that doesn't have many picks, Indies looking for picks. Uh, there are teams that you can get up in there to get what if there's a player you so desire. Now, I'll flip it with that when when the question came in from South Carolina about is there a move up? That's what I'm telling you. So let me flip it to you, Ira, and say, is there a player if he is there at X spot, let's call it 15, right where the Vikings are picking, and there's somebody in there. Is there a player that's sitting there that you say that's it? I've got to move to get him.

But are they desperate enough to do it? So they may be looking at it going, hell, if he's there at 18, I'll trade up to get him. I think some I think you're gonna see somebody do that for Simpson this year, is why I brought him up. And your team, if even if you get Aaron back, what would it hurt to let that boy sit behind him for a year and learn from him? I'd rather have people and these running backs as well. You talked about I think one of them's gonna go top 10 easily. Love, I think, definitely will go early in the game. That running back from Notre Dame, if you're if you're needing someone there, he's pretty good. Uh uh price is a good running back, but I don't know if he's worth the move up. But to your point, the Kenny Pickett thing was a stretch a few years ago. Something they don't ever do. Pittsburgh doesn't do stuff like that.

Uh well, I'm telling you, let the sun bitch go. I'd rather take Drew Aller in the sixth round or Carson Beck in the sixth round if they're gonna take a quarter. Yeah, but Simpson's got a small, he he's got 12 games, right? I mean, he's it was like Anthony Richardson. I've heard that the Jets would be willing to get up there around 33 if he was still there and take him there. I I tell you, for me, the one guy that I think is is moving around all over the boards is uh the safety again. What's the how you pronounce it from Oregon? Thielen uh I can't. Uh but I heard that he is the one that could make people's draft boards move because there are several teams that need safeties. Keep in mind Pittsburgh needs a left guard. There's only three guards they got showing in the first two rounds. The first one's a big kid out of Penn State, which they got mocked to fall right to Pittsburgh. There are not many guards in there, but there are several tackles, there's several edge rushers. You don't see an off-ball linebacker like you do the kid from Ohio State. You don't see a safety much like you do the kid from Ohio State. But when you get to the wide receivers, uh, what's the kid from uh Ohio State that's gonna go uh early? That's next year. No, but there's one this year, too. And then but then you got Boston, you got Mikhail Lemon, you got the kid out of Arizona State that stays hurt all the time, you got Brazil from Tennessee. The receivers are but again, after those first eight, you can look at many different draft boards and they got them all ranked different. Uh uh the safety out of Toledo, they've got him ranked as high on some boards as a kid out of Oregon. Uh I don't know who to believe and when. I you know, it's all in personal preference. Ira, when you're picking, if you're the GM right now of the Raiders and you got the picks you got, you've had a fairly, and I think a fairly successful free agent season. You got a good number of draft picks, you're not hurting for them, but you don't have too many. Is that where a team would need to stay pat and go from there?

I mean, we got 10 picks, so we're still still have quite a few picks as of right now. I like where they're at. I like where we're going. I would stand pat with it, unless there was some ridiculous offer made. I mean, they're not going to trade away number one, but uh as they get deeper into it, they may get a two threes for a two, then I think they'd be willing to entertain those those offers.

Here's a thought, though. If you think the two, three, or four quarterbacks from next year are better than what is here this year at Mendoza, you could trade. You've got cousins, he can certainly get you through a year. You don't expect to be Super Bowl bound this year, I wouldn't think. I don't know. Well everybody thinks every year they're gonna go to Super Bowl. But if you could get something pretty nice next year for Mendoza this year, only if you think the ones from next year are just rated that much higher. But real quick on what you said earlier about if the eighteenth spot came open, well, that's the Vikings. If that spot was open and Pittsburgh reached out to us and said, Hey, we'll swap picks with you and we'll give you another one next year, we're only dropping from 18 to 21. I think we would do that. If it wasn't if it wasn't a stud running back with that uh or a divisional opponent, or that safety from Oregon.
