Tell me now that he isn't officially a Raider, what your thoughts are there.

Yeah, the Mendoza era has finally begun, right? It began about what, six months ago? But I'm excited for him to be there. I know it's hard to pick winners and losers in a draft after one night, and a pick that you knew was going to be a pick. It's still, I think it's a huge win for the Raiders. Even more importantly, with that pick, Kurt Cousins being there, I think he's going to be a great mentor for that young man. I thought he represented himself well last night in interviews and uh the way he just carries himself. I think he's going to be a great professional. And uh just excited to have that pick. We sucked last year to get it, but all the offseason moves that's happened, the ones that didn't happen, frankly, as well with uh Max Crosby, I think uh has been very beneficial for the Raiders. And I I love the pick. Uh hope we're not picking first again next year.

Yeah, we could probably trade up and get it from the Vikings next year. Oh my goodness. Where do you go? We're gonna start that way, are we? Where do you go in round two? Yeah, I think we're gonna have to go wide receiver. I that they need another weapon. If we don't go wide receiver, I would like to see him go offensive line, one of those two positions.

No, not anymore with Brady around. There's some sensibility that they need linemen, or that kid's gonna get killed, or they need to let him sit the first half of the season behind cousins and watch. And let Cush get killed. No, Cousins ain't gonna get killed. He's gonna throw it away. He's a merino, that thing. This kid is not throw it away, kid. He's a playmaker. He wants to run, he has to do whatever he wants to. I like that. Rodney, we go down to pick 18. 18, that is correct. And Caleb Banks from Florida goes to the Vikings. Last night, all the that this is either a big bomb or it's a big bust. What did you think when you hear that?

When we talked before, I thought we were gonna somewhere throughout the draft gonna try to get better in the trenches. So he's a talented kid. Probably Flores had a lot to do with that pick, other than Simpson going, he's probably the second biggest shock of of where he went. Hopefully it'll work out well for us, but time will tell. Like the first pick for this general manager could be wow, that's a great pick, or what was he thinking?

Or he's now an assistant general manager somewhere else. Yeah. Um for the Raiders. So big big news for my guys. The big guard goes to Baltimore 14. That's who the Pittsburgh Steelers were tied with the most. I hate that because the Ravens got a guard that never gave up a college sack. Uh, he is a monster, a machine. He's gonna kill it. The Steelers then get on the phone because the Cowboys are picking 20th, and they get on the phone with Mikhail Lemon because he's fallen that far, and surely Dallas, with the shitty defense they got, has got to take all defensive players. And lo and behold, they're on the phone with Mikhail Lemon and the Eagles, Howie Roseman's trying to get in touch with him because he trades up with Dallas. Now, what dumbass trades in your own division anyway? Dallas ought to be kicked in the sack just for trading, and they did it for two-force. They moved from 20 to 24, 23, I'm sorry. And they they take Malachi Lawrence uh from UCF, the edge rusher. They also got what I thought was the best player in the draft, Dallas did by taking the safety out of um Ohio State Downs with the 11th pick, how he slipped there, I don't know. So the the Steelers think they're getting the steal of the draft, no pun intended, and Mikhail. They're on the phone. Roseman's calling him saying, hey, we traded up to take you. He's not answering the phone because he's on with McCarthy. Lo and behold, the Steelers lose their guy, but instead of taking the next best receiver, which Concepcion went and picked 24 to the Browns, Omar Cooper went at 30 to the Jets, who traded back in. We'll get to that in a second, the third, first rounder. The Steelers end up taking a Nigerian-born tackle who did not play college football until he got to junior college. He didn't play football until he got to junior college. He is an insane athlete, but very raw. So I watch my normal podcasters, particularly the guy I'm going to shout out because I'm sure he's listening to our podcast. The kid that does Steelers chat lost his sh and he looks like he couldn't pick his nose during it. You remember the movie Little Giants when the kid had to snap bubbles come? That was this kid that runs this podcast. He I've taken sh bigger than him, and now he's in there talking about this. I can't believe this is the biggest waste of a draft pick. And then my son, who is, you know, dialed in on this, pretty calm. Zach says, Dad, you don't draft sexy, you draft to build franchises. And this kid with the Broderick Jones left tackle injury, they said he had a setback with his neck injury. They can move Fonatu, the Troy Fontaine from the right to the left, put this kid at right. They're still missing the left guard. And I think there's a bunch of receivers to come, look at the Steelers, watch them trade up. One of the smartest moves the 49ers did was they traded out of the first round to get this very first pick with Arizona to trade back in or the Jets to trade back in, because those receivers that they might want are still going to be there too. They got the pick of four or five of them. So now we've gone through these favorite teams. We've talked about some things. I think the Cowboys did extremely well, even though their boneheaded asses traded inside their own division. So the guy picks a safety, then he picks a linebacker, an edge rusher, and then by the way, gives Philadelphia another receiver. So who's who's going to cover you? What are you thinking about? They give him a trade for A.J. Brown. I think that because the Mikhail Lemmon pick solidifies that A.J. Brown's not going to be an Eagle. So June 1, they'll trade him to the Patriots unless the coach is somewhere on video again with a reporter, and he's going to counseling on Saturday for his reporter issues. But I do like two things. The Browns were not the Browns. Then they got KC Conception as a wide receiver at 24. The Jets traded in. Remember, this is three first rounders. People think that's a big deal. Hell, they had that a couple years ago. And outside of their second rounder, Brees Hall, only one's there, and he's not as good a player as their second rounder. Ira, was there anything that shocked you in that first round outside of when you were on cloud nine when your boys picked the quarterback?

I don't guess shocked, but um I'm I thought three Jeremiah Love went early considering what they needed. Not that he's not a great talent, but it's gonna be tough for him to be able to produce like he needs to produce. I think he'll be very similar to Barkley when Barkley was with the Giants. And then when he left the Giants, he became a great, he became what we think of Barkley now. I think that was a little bit early. But one of the things that really good, I thought the Giants did really well as well. If you think about Harbaugh, how he how he built the Ravens, it's very it looks like he's something doing something very similar to that, taking key players at key positions. With I thought Reese slipped way back. I thought he would be a top two or three pick. And that offensive tackle they got uh Magola, I believe, was that dude's a beast.

He's nasty. Yeah. And if you look back at his Ravens days, you're right. He started with guys like Suggs and he he went and got big tackles too. I I I see how they're working. I I like that. What about Ty Simpson to the Rams? Shock of the night had to be.

I thought he would be in the early 20s. Um, we talked last week. I thought he, you know, wouldn't have been bad for Pittsburgh to get him, but um I think they're looking to the future, which they have to. And McVeigh did call Stafford and go, hey, here's what we're doing. And evidently he was cool with it. And they went with that. So I think it'd be good for that young man as well. I mean, he's only got 15 starts and at Alabama, so it'd be good for him to sit back and watch um watch how Stafford goes to work in the NFL and hopefully they can dream this young man to to take over for him one day. But it was a little early, a little reach for him.

I think it's a great move for Simpson. What better scenario could he ask for? You got a classic guy like Stafford and McVeigh as your coach? He couldn't have asked for better scenario.

He said the right things last night, too. When they interviewed him, you know, when he got picked, said the perfectly right things. You know, hey, what a place to go. Absolutely. Quarterback coach, a MVP quarterback that's coming off an MVP year even in his late 30s. Hell, I'm I'm down to sit and learn.

Well, he again, he has like Anthony Richardson's starts. He has his year starts, but the the key, what they said last night, was he didn't jump around to do that. He sat and waited his turn at Alabama. And when he got his turn, he made the most of it. Because remember, that program's not quite what it was under Saban. It's fallen off. Now it's still a top ten program, but it's fallen off. I'll ask you these three picks, Ira, and what's your opinion? So remember I said the Jets on their last three pick first round, they took a wide out, a cornerback, and a linebacker. Wide out is decent, probably excited at Rogers that year. I didn't have anybody to throw to him. Cornerbacks now with the Colts, linebackers now with another team. Brees Hall was their second round pick. So last night they take their first pick and they take an edge rusher, David Bailey, out of Texas Tech, because he got a defensive head coach, and frankly, that I don't have a problem with that. He was ranked very high on draft boards, period. Then they get down and they on at 16, they take the big tight end out of Oregon, who is a slam stud, right? So now you you give who whomever your young quarterback or future quarterback would be a comfort blanket, right? A tight end that is all world. And then they trade back in and they take a wide receiver and Omar Cooper, who, by the way, is an extremely good route runner and a great after-the-catch guy. So another guy that they can get the ball to quick and do things. Were the Jets better this time, you think? Not only time will tell, but remember the last time we had they had three picks, we thought this this could be the turn of this franchise. They're back. Is this better off, Iron, than that that draft was?

It seems like if you're a Jet, you're destined not to not to do anything well. But I do like the I love the David Bailey pick. I think he was a right now ready player for NFL. Uh Reese has a little bit more maturing to do as far as you know his body and all that, but um solid pick there. Not sure about that tight end. I know he is he looks good on tape. I we'll see what he does when he transitions to the to the pros. They need help uh at at wide receivers. Uh we all know that. But uh, who's gonna get it to him and who's gonna protect the quarterback that's uh trying to get it to them? I think that's more of the issue for that team than uh than what they drafted today. So if they don't hit the offensive line hard in the next next couple of rounds, it's gonna be or get some of those players, it's gonna be tough for anybody there.

Yeah, I do like I do like it. It's it gives that fan base at least hope that, hey, our team's trying. Here's what we're doing to do it. So you gotta keep, especially in New York, you gotta you gotta do what you gotta do to to stay relevant. And I think they've done a they're trying that with uh with those three first rounders.

I think part of it about what you said earlier was with Pittsburgh, your son said it's you don't want the sexy pick, and you've struggled as long as the Jets are. You almost, as I just said, you have to have some of that.

Well, it was said yesterday, and I want your opinion on this, both of you. The Ravens have 10 picks. The Ravens don't need 10 picks. The Jets and the Cardinals and the Titans, they need 10 picks. Pittsburgh has 12 picks. They don't need 12 picks. This is gonna blow your mind, Ira. You ready? Lay it on me. Zach just walked in the room and Rodney gave up his headset to Zach to have this conversation.

I don't know what the uh take was before this, but there's of the three guys drafted by the Jets in the first round, none of them will make it to a second contract with that team. And I bet Kenyon Sadiq, who is best case scenario is OJ Howard, is traded before year three. Wow. I mean, if you think about it, you got two uh two guys. One's definitely a projected tight end. Your quarterback is Geno Smith. So if you want to give the Steelers a hard time for bringing back a 43-year-old Aaron Rodgers, a guy who's run won uh you know four MVPs, having Geno Smith, uh Frank Reich is now back again as the OC, to me, that's that's just a tough you know, fantasy land to believe that those guys are gonna be able to get a bigger thing. He's a comfort blanket, though.

That's why you draft tight ends, right? Now, here's what what I ask a question. I want you to tell me. Last time the Jets had three picks, they take a wide receiver, a cornerback, and a linebacker, they get Brees Hall in the second round. Of that draft, the only one that's still well, the two that are there, Brees Hall is better than the wide receiver. The corner? Yeah. The corner is in in Indy, and the linebackers in Buffalo, where he's somewhere else anyway. That pick was supposed to turn the franchise around.

A lot of times it's gets it's just flashy, and sorry, uh Ira, but the Raiders, the Cleveland Farrell draft class, they got three guys in the first round, or at least three in the top 50. Yeah. It's Cleveland Farrell, they got the corner out of Ohio State who had some legal troubles. But swinging at high prospect names, I mean, first round draft picks are already a 50-50 hit anyway. It doesn't seem to improve your odds just because you're the one who picks them. And then troubled franchises like New York aren't going to turn turn these guys around. If you want a comfort blanket, you take uh Tyler Warren, you take uh Brock Bowers. Kenyon Sadiq, the the upside is explosive, you know, explosive plays. He's still a project in blocking. They got the tight end out of LSU last year, uh Mason Taylor, who is uh Jason Taylor's nephew, I think, uh to kind of do a one-two punch thing there, but it's still like I I don't know. I I don't really know what the the plan is.

So two things that I'm letting you bounce. Caleb Banks Rodney's Vikings. Was that a lean in because the defensive coordinator is the loudest one in the room? Was it a reach because last night they said this is either a boom or it just could be a a bust.

If you're a solid organization that has the infrastructure to bring guys like that in, and you have Spaggs or you have Brian Flores, yeah, take them. There's a the higher chance they hit their upside because you're putting them in the right place. Uh there's I don't know how much further away from uh Miami you can get to get him in a better, you know, isolated from uh his uh surroundings. It seems like he kinda uh had some boom bust stuff going on. But aside from the injuries, I think he's a freak. He's 6'6, a 315, crazy reach, extremely productive at times.

But you don't you don't pay attention to Mox, but most of the Mox I had had him falling into the 50s. Because people like me don't know Sharp, that's the problem.

I mean and and Mox it gets to the it gets to a point where Tennessee uh taking Carnell Tate, which I I believe is a great pick, changes everything. So you got the Cardinals who take love and then Carnell Tate goes four. All of a sudden Arvell Reese is there at five, which changes the Giants who were for sure gonna take a receiver, apparently in love with Jordan Tyson, say we're gonna shore up the trenches and we're gonna have four uh strong linebackers to rotate, it changes how the rest of the board falls. And then it it creates a positional value where all of a sudden your D-tackles, if you're on like if you're a team that needs a defensive tackle and three have gone where none were projected, that's how guys sneak into the first because defensive tackles become in one of those positions where if you don't have edge rushers, which is the Chiefs, for example, George Carl office fine, but their pressure comes from the interior. So if you can have uh Chris Jones, who's getting a little old, compare that with a young guy you know out of Clemson, then it could work. And then the Vikings just kind of have some riches up front.

So now quickly I'm gonna ask you this. Steelers uh were linked to that big guard out of Penn State. He goes to Baltimore, which sucks. Then they're on the phone with Malachi Lemon, uh Makai Lemon. The Eagles trade up to take him, which by the way, Dallas should be kicked in the balls for trading within their own division anyway, because they were gonna get the defender they wanted. They got some value in fourth round picks, I get it.

The Steelers then take a tackle who'd hadn't played, just started playing football in junior college, freak athlete, concerned with his hands, but you said last night you build franchises that way, not a sexy pick. Now, one of these kids that runs this podcast was the kid from the Little Giants I mentioned earlier, snot out of his nose, never played football. Was the pick a good one?

Yes. Project Jones had a setback on his neck injury, and I know we talked about it last night, but uh if you think about the like killer bees uh 2014-15 Big Ben for tie Drew Brees one season with uh just over five thousand yards passing. They had uh Pouncey, DeCastro, I know DeCastro was at least a one-time all pro. And then they had Mike Munchek as the coordinator, I mean line coach. Line coach. So if you want a quality football team, you get quality guys at positions that are tough to fill. The line is is tough, you have to throw resources at it, and then you have to develop those guys. If you look at Pittsburgh who should start next with the start next year, uh Troy Fontenou is gonna move to left tackle, I'm assuming. Right. And the kid they just brought in is gonna be at right. Darnell Washington is gonna be married up to him a lot.

But I mean the tough thing there is that then that projects Broderick Jones starting to left tackle and the guy who's played tackle in college moves. Yeah. Because Mason McCormick staying at right guard. That means Troy Fontaine is staying at right tackle. And then of course Zach Fraser at center. So it just projects to be more of a project on that left side. And I don't know if you know this for bringing in a 43-year-old quarterback.

If it went my way, like best draft ever between days one and two, it would be a combination of guard at this second round pick, Elijah Surratt in the third, and then Jacob Rodriguez in the third. Because we need linebacker. We need linebacker depth. Even Malik Harrison missed time last year. Patrick Queen, I I really hope doesn't get traded, but between him and uh Peyton Wilson rotating, you you just need to keep putting putting guys in that in that spot. Elijah Surratt's a great uh would be a great compliment. He has some overlapping skill set with uh uh Pittman, but they're gonna be a big physical group.

You could you could see teams unloading some older expiring contracts.

There are guys there that we couldn't even think of their name that could have been great, really good to great NFL players if they'd have been in the right situation. And there's other guys that turned out to be really good players, marginal because of where they went. Absolutely.

But that was my point that I always say that in this first round in particular, you everybody has needs. But you have to pick the player that is the best player on your board at that time, which the Steelers found was Mikhail Lemon, who got they got bamboo. Yeah, who wasn't on the board. But again, the the way that it works is you get all this stuff and and you you gotta make it work. And Zach said something too that that we we can't put less stress on. Who somebody else picks affects your draft board too? Like if what if if the if the you get Banks and he's your fiftieth guy and you move him off your board, and then say you had another DT that's maybe your twenty-fifth guy, now he's not gone. Now you're thinking about these teams are gonna start doing movement to find the way their board is. I hope the Steelers take Dominique Orange, by the way, the the big kid out of Iowa State that's a huge, massive man.

The other thing that happens is exactly what Zach said, you have a team that Cowboys, Browns historically have done some crazy stuff. They do something with the 12th pick, and all of a sudden it's oh my gosh, this opens up somebody else. Well, that effects three picks later and six picks later, and the domino effect is insane, as Bubba likes to say. It's crazy how one franchise or one pick can change so many things for that entire draft because the dominoes that fall with it of I didn't think we had any chance in the world of getting this guy. And he's still available. I can't not take him.

They got Jamaud McCoy, the corner out of Tennessee, is is ranked the next best player. And then they got Emmanuel McNeil Warren, the safety I like out of Toledo. It looks like a bomb when he hits somebody. They got him ranked right behind him, and those two players are available. We'll see what happens there. Rodney, to the Vikings, what what do you need now? What do you got to get? I think you're still going offensive line. Trench is a guy who wins. Zach's right. They're hard to find both sides of the ball. I hope Pittsburgh moves. I would like to see him move and take a guard because after, say, 50, there is a cluster of about eight wide receivers in there that you could trade up again, and they're all about the same. And Pittsburgh historically finds wide receivers in later rounds.

And he's trying to take my job. But what he said, which was just what you said, he said, Hey, we're we got the killer bees and we're aging on defense. That pick, we had somebody to go right in on defense that was playing team. What are you doing? And they were thinking about the future. Now they've screwed that up because it hasn't worked since. But they are close. And so I thought that would be an impact player, particularly to have Makai Lemon for their taking.

But here's what I'd tell you. If you pick best available, Steelers went in best available every year, quarterback off the board. Meaning they had quarterbacks ranked, but even if the best player in the draft was one and they were picking one, it wasn't going to be it. They had their guy.
